One of the first in the country

A Lionesses Futures Fund pitch

The Lionesses Futures Fund is a £30 million programme set up after England's Euro 2022 win, backed by the Government, The FA and the Premier League and delivered through the Football Foundation. It builds high-quality pitches with changing facilities and guaranteed peak-time access for women's and girls' football.

Leah Williamson is from Newport Pagnell. She unveiled the pitch on 13 August 2024, at one of the first sites in the country to be completed under the fund.

Pitch rules

Prohibited footwear for 3G pitches

  • YesClean football boots with moulded plastic or rubber round studs
  • NoMetal studs: screw-in metal or metal-tipped studs can puncture and damage the synthetic carpet
  • NoBlades: bladed boots and chevron or knife-like stud shapes can cut the turf fibres and create excessive rotational traction
  • NoFlat-soled shoes: fashion trainers, running trainers and indoor court shoes provide insufficient grip and can compress the rubber infill
  • NoDimpled soles: astro turf trainers with multi-stud rubber bottoms are prohibited at this facility because they flatten the artificial-grass pile
  • NoMuddy boots. Clean them before you come on

All players and match officials must follow these footwear rules. Anyone wearing unsuitable footwear will be asked to change or leave, and no refund will be given.

Spectators are not permitted on the artificial grass playing surface.

A limited number of pairs of suitable boots, in a range of sizes, are available to borrow from the 3G pitch office if required. To protect the quality and lifespan of the surface, the Football Foundation warranty requirements are strictly enforced for every player and match official.

Frequently asked

What size is the pitch and how does it split?

Full size 3G artificial grass. Hire the whole pitch for 9 or 11-a-side, or a half for 7-a-side. Tell us which when you book and we will set it up.

We do not routinely split it into quarters for 5-a-side. If that is what you need, ask and we will see what we can do, but it is by arrangement rather than something you can book online. For 5-a-side as standard, Willen Lake has two dedicated pitches.

What footwear is allowed?

Only clean football boots with moulded plastic or rubber round studs are permitted. Astro turf trainers, dimpled or flat soles, metal or metal-tipped studs and blades are not allowed. The rule applies to every player and match official, with no exceptions. Spectators must remain off the artificial grass surface. These requirements are conditions of the Football Foundation warranty, rather than a discretionary Kick Off Sports rule. A limited number of pairs of suitable boots, in a range of sizes, are available to borrow from the 3G pitch office if required.

Is the pitch floodlit?

Yes, and it is available through the evening.

Can we book the same slot every week?

Yes. Block bookings for a season get a guaranteed weekly slot. The published hourly rates still apply; there is no separate block-booking discount. Send an enquiry with the day, time and number of weeks.

Do you provide balls, bibs or goals?

Goals are set up for whichever format you have booked. Please bring your own balls and bibs.

Is there parking, and are there changing rooms?

Parking is free, although spaces may be limited depending on the day and time. Changing rooms are available by request but cannot be guaranteed and may be withdrawn at any time. Toilets are next to the social club. The clubhouse is run separately from the pitch, so its opening hours and terms vary.

What happens if the weather is bad?

3G drains, so games very rarely get called off. We will only close the pitch if conditions are unsafe, for example lightning or ice, and we will tell you as early as we can.

Who is the pitch named after?

Leah Williamson, the England captain. Newport Pagnell is her hometown, and she unveiled the pitch on 13 August 2024.

What is the Lionesses Futures Fund?

A £30 million fund set up after England's Euro 2022 win, backed by the Government, The FA and the Premier League and delivered by the Football Foundation. It builds pitches with changing facilities and guaranteed peak-time access for women's and girls' football. This was one of the first sites in the country to be completed under it.

Is there dedicated time for women's and girls' football?

We support women's and girls' football every day rather than limiting access to particular protected nights. Contact us with the day and time you need.

Why do you call it 3G rather than 4G?

3G is the industry term for a third generation artificial grass surface: long pile carpet with a rubber and sand infill, certified for competitive football. It is the language the FA and the Football Foundation use, so we use it too. There is no agreed technical definition of 4G.
